MEMBERSHIPS and APPROVALS

Picture
We are approved by the Division of Private Business and Vocational Schools of the Illinois Board of Higher Education.  This enables the graduates of our Diploma program to take the licensing exam and apply for the state license.

Specialized accreditation is crucial for a profession to ensure quality education. As the only specialized accreditor for massage/bodywork and esthetics, COMTA focuses on student learning or competencies  fundamental to massage therapy, including in-depth curriculum review by massage therapists rather than general educators. COMTA is the only accrediting agency of, by and for massage therapists and estheticians. We were the first school in the country to receive COMTA's Endorsed Curriculum designation by COMTA.  We received institutional accreditation in 2021.

Quality in massage therapy education is important to us, and for that reason we were one of 19 massage schools that helped found the Alliance for Massage Therapy Education (AFMTE).  We have held Gold level status ever since.  AFMTE has launched and participated in several initiatives such as the National Teacher Education Standards Project (NTESP) and the Massage Therapy Body of Knowledge (MTBOK).

We have been a code-assigned school of the National Certification Board for Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB) since 2003. This recognition provides an additional level of assurance for our students and enables them to pursue Board Certification after completing the program and gaining hands-on experience and continuing education.

ABMP is the largest and best massage therapy association in the country.  The organization has spearheaded and supported many initiatives for the benefit of the massage therapy profession.  It also provides professional liability insurance, exam preparation, and many resources for massage students.  We have been an ABMP Institutional member Since 2002.
New School for Massage and its Diploma program meet or exceed the requirements set forth by the Division of Private Business and Vocational Schools of the Illinois Board of Higher Education, COMTA Endorsed-Curriculum requirements, the institutional membership requirements of Associated Bodywork and Massage Professionals (ABMP), the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork (NCBTMB) for the purpose of graduate eligibility to take the National Certification Exam, the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards (FSMTB) for the purpose of graduate eligibility to take the Massage & Bodywork Licensing Exam, and the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) for graduate eligibility to apply for licensing. The New School for Massage is a founding member of the Alliance for Massage Therapy Education (AFMTE). The New School for Massage and the Diploma program meet or exceed the hourly and/or educational requirements of most states and jurisdictions regulating massage therapy. Prospective students are encouraged to check www.massagetherapy.com for up-to-date information on state licensing requirements.

The school does not participate in any accreditation process for the purpose of participating in Federal Financial Aid programs. In May 2004, the school obtained the services of an accreditation consultant to ensure that all its internal processes and administrative policies meet accreditation standards, but elected not to proceed with accreditation as the school does not intend on seeking Title IV funds for Financial Aid.  The New School for Massage is not accredited by US Department of Education recognized accrediting body.
